The film “Late Nights, Strange Calls, and Large Amounts of Cash” deals with the issue of drug trafficking worldwide. In this film, we see Michael (Breaun Randle) as he struggles to provide for his family. He becomes successful, but at the cost of his relationship with his wife (Allie Bruno) and his daughter (Jazzy Morris).
This film is based on drug trafficking in Afghanistan and South America, among other locations. Our group also examined a wide array of other issues, including conflict resources, piracy, and deforestation. All of these issues affect many people, and unfortunately, what draws these issues together is the fact that they affect every aspect of people’s lives, and they aren’t projected to get any better in the immediate future. On the topic of conflict resources, as of 2002, 85 companies were accused of committing human rights abuses in order to take advantage of all of the resources present in the Dominican Republic of the Congo. When dealing with the issue of deforestation, we see people like Dorothy Stang, a Catholic nun working to stop the devastation of the rain forests, being killed in order to silence opposition. Piracy involves people doing terrible things like kidnapping for ransom, but the question behind all of these issues is why. Our group believes that people do things that they would not normally do out of desperation. People want to help and save their families and friends, and some people will do anything to accomplish that goal.
We have all heard about drug trafficking, but we don’t often see the effects that it can have on personal lives. Our group explored that aspect of the issue, and we hope to show that the real issues of the world aren’t necessarily drug trafficking or piracy, but rather desperation and necessity. One study completed by the United Nations and UNRISD on Mexico “shows that illicit drug abuse correlates more strongly with the disintegration of the family than with poverty.” Most people would do anything for their families, and therefore the root of the issue is that people are in situations where they can’t provide, so they turn to other things that we now view as serious problems in our world.
Despite the fact that we don’t expect to see great leaps of improvement over the next years, we hope to raise awareness of these world issues through our film.
