After nine year old Emma Smith moves to Beijing with her family, she is faced with a fatal problem. Her brother, Noah, has a severe asthma attack due to the extreme smog throughout the area. Despite the best efforts, Noah passes away leaving his family devastated. Since Emma's best friend is now gone, she feels she has to do something to honor his passing. To both pay tribute to his death and give an effort to solve China's serious air pollution problem, she designs a bike with air filtering capabilities. Proud of her innovative idea, she decides to enter her bike into the Beijing Science Fair. Upon winning, she dedicates her bike to the person who inspired her from the start, her brother.
This film seeks to show the negative repercussions that air pollution has on the daily lives of those effected. While the movie depicts China as having major air pollution problems, the United States is not left out of this dilemma. With over 50,000 people in America dying each year due to air pollution, and over 65% of deaths in Asia caused by air pollution, it is apparent that something needs to be done. Today, going outside in Beijing and breathing in the air is comparable to smoking 21 cigarettes. This results in the formation of places called "cancer villages." With 30% of all cancer deaths in China from lung cancer, it shows the devastation the pollution has on the people. The pollution is only getting worse and China is in dire need of a solution. The young Emma Smith believes she has a start to that solution.
